Ontario and Manitoba Partner on Energy Innovation
•Through the Council of the Federation, Canada’s Premiers are working on a Canadian Energy Strategy to support regional needs and address common energy challenges.
•Ontario’s electricity sector will be completely coal-free by the end of 2014. This is the single biggest climate change initiative in North America.
•Ontario is hosting the Canadian Energy Innovation Summit to provide a forum for developing partnerships that can leverage Ontario’s expertise and strengthen Canada’s ability to compete in international markets and create good jobs.
•Manitoba’s electricity is made from more than 98% clean, renewable sources.
•Manitoba’s Power Smart energy efficiency program has saved Manitoba families, firms, facilities and farms more than $900 million on their utility bills since it was launched. Continue reading
Ontario Increasing Minimum Wage
Ontario is increasing the minimum wage from $10.25 to $11 per hour on June 1, 2014. This new rate reflects the rise in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) since the last minimum wage increase in 2010 and is part of the provincial government’s commitment to fairness. Continue reading
Ontario Launches the Healthy Kids Community Challenge
The challenge is a new initiative to help children be more active and healthy so they can reach their full potential. The province will provide 30 communities with funding, training, advice, social marketing tools and other resources over four years to develop and implement community-based programs and activities that promote healthy habits. The classes are very much hands on only, no lectures on art theory; and everyone there can’t draw or paint just like me, so I feel safe with my new found company. The 2 guys teaching art class here speak Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, and English, plus both are advanced artists themselves. This means that when we get stuck on painting something (we are now painting on canvas with acrylic paints) which happens all the time, the teachers come over and fix it for us, making us students look good. Rooftops Canada, is recruiting four interns to work with partner organizations in Sub Saharan Africa. These six-month internships are part of our program with the Canadian International Development Agency’s Partnerships with Canadians Branch. They are not IYIP internships but we are using similar eligibility criteria.
